A family visit to the Massalikoul Djinan mosque
Tucked away in the heart of Dakar, the Massalikoul Djinan Mosque is one of Senegal’s most impressive and meaningful landmarks. Opened in 2019, it’s the largest mosque in the country and one of the biggest in all of West Africa. The mosque is also a major spiritual center for the Mouride brotherhood, one of Senegal’s most influential Sufi communities. Even if you’re not visiting for prayer, the mosque is worth seeing for its striking architecture – gleaming white walls, elegant arches, and a tall minaret that dominates the skyline. The atmosphere around the mosque is calm and welcoming, especially during quieter hours, offering a nice break from the buzz of the city. As with many religious sites in Senegal, visitors are expected to dress modestly and be respectful (as seen on the pictures below), but you’ll often find locals happy to share a smile or a bit of history. It’s a place that beautifully reflects Dakar’s blend of modern life and deep-rooted tradition.
