Sine Saloum
Sine Saloum
Sine-Saloum is an area most known for its fascinating and beautiful nature, but where you can also find exciting cultural experiences. The unique landscape, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers a chain of islands surrounded by a labyrinthine network of mangrove vegetation, lagoons, and small coves. The clean air, tranquility, and special atmosphere invite slow canoe trips and peaceful discoveries.
Places like Toubacouta, Foundiougne, Palmarin, Dionewar, Niodor, Djiffer, and Ndangane are perfect for contemplation and the joy of exploration. In the surrounding wild nature, you can, with the help of guides, encounter hyenas, jackals, monkeys, warthogs, dolphins, and even manatees. Many reptiles such as turtles, lizards, and crocodiles also live here.
Sine-Saloum is a paradise for both sport fishermen and bird watchers. Over 400 bird species have made their home here, including flamingos, herons, and the world's largest colony of royal terns. The rich marine life also includes more than 100 fish species, such as barracuda, grouper, carp, and oysters.
Canoe excursions through the Saloum Delta's waterways and islands offer the opportunity to meet the Niominka and Serer peoples and experience their daily lives for a day.
Just outside the village of Palmarin, the landscape is adorned with round lagoons in various colors. The lagoons trap salt, creating surfaces in shades of black, green, red, brown, orange, yellow, and white.
