Petite Côte
Petite Côte - sun, beaches and nature
Just outside of Dakar, mighty baobab trees line the way to Petite Côte, a coastal stretch where sun, calm seas, and long sandy beaches meet in a landscape offering both adventure and traditional life. Here, idyllic bathing spots are nestled within the beautiful nature of the lagoons, and a peaceful atmosphere invites swimming, sunbathing, and water sports.
The first stop could be Joal-Fadiouth, the childhood home of poet-president Léopold Sédar Senghor, where the surroundings inspired his poetry. Here, you can take a canoe ride through the mangrove forest. A narrow wooden bridge connects the mainland to the island of Fadiouth, which is completely covered in seashells. Among the attractions is a beautiful cemetery – shared by Christians and Muslims – which stands as a testament to Senegal’s long tradition of religious tolerance.
Further south lies Saly, the most famous resort town in the region, perfect for a beach holiday, water sports like surfing and kitesurfing, or a round of golf on the beautiful course surrounded by baobab trees. Here, you’ll find high-quality hotels, and many Europeans have chosen to buy homes in the area.
In Somone, you’ll find a quieter atmosphere, with some of Petite Côte’s finest beaches and a protected lagoon that also serves as a sanctuary for birds. A little further south along the coast is the charming village of Popenguine, where golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and a nearby nature reserve create the perfect place for hiking and nature experiences.
Petite Côte ends at Toubab Dialao, a small artistic village by a wild beach lined with red cliffs and rolling hills. The tranquility and beauty here have attracted many to settle and create small paradises by the sea.
In short, Petite Côte is a place where sun, sea, nature, and culture come together to create an unforgettable experience.
